I won’t speak for the entirety of the middle class, but I have found a certain outlook appears to rule the roost when it comes to the debates I have with friends who identify themselves with the middle class.
The core values that comprise success itself are permissible only within a certain set of circumstances, which to an extent, limits their function within society, and debilitates the power of their capabilities in our lives.
Writing with lines. Art within a structure. Jobs that follow a preset path. And while I know it would be naive of me to lambast these standards and call them foolish – that would be ignorant, for that kind of structure and system lets society function properly – while I realize this, I also know that the reason why fantasy and rebels and criminals and celebrities fascinate us so much is because they have so much abandon.
This post is actually my final essay for LIB 310, Creativity, here at GVSU: Being both a passionate musician and an audio engineer on the verge of hurling myself into “the real world,” I’ve been examining and pondering this new musical climate, and it seems to be an incredible time to be a sound recordist, to be an instrumentalist, and to be a music lover.
